Congratulations to Sarawak Energy — Bakun HEP wins the 2025 IHA Blue Planet Prize

"Bakun demonstrates what can be achieved when a project commits to continuous improvement as a long-term vision. This award is richly deserved." — Eddie Rich, IHA CEO

HA is delighted to congratulate Sarawak Energy on the award of the 2025 IHA Blue Planet Prize — the sector's most prestigious recognition for hydropower sustainability performance — for its 2,520 MW Bakun Hydroelectric Plant. The prize was presented on 9 September 2025 in Paris during the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower, with IHA President and former Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, making the presentation.

The Blue Planet Prize is awarded to hydropower projects that demonstrate exceptional sustainability performance, as assessed independently under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard. Eligible projects are those assessed or certified under the HSS between July 2023 and June 2025. The award requires evidence of good practice across corporate policies, on-the-ground implementation, transparent documentation, and public consultation.

Bakun's recognition follows its 2025 Silver Certification under the HSS — the result of extensive work by Sarawak Energy since acquiring the facility in 2017 to systematically strengthen its ESG performance. The independent assessment highlighted standout performance in community engagement, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and governance.

Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili described the award as an affirmation of the company's ongoing alignment with Sarawak's Sustainability Vision and international benchmarks. The company has committed to certifying all its hydropower plants under the HSS by 2030 — a target that, combined with this recognition, positions Sarawak Energy as a regional model for the sector.
