Not every hydropower breakthrough involves gigawatts and vast reservoirs. Global Hydro Energy, headquartered in Austria with subsidiaries and partners worldwide, joined IHA in 2025 with a mission that is arguably more quietly revolutionary: making existing and new small hydropower smarter, longer-lasting, and more efficient — one plant at a time. The company provides complete water-to-wire solutions globally, from greenfield projects and full plant revitalisations to advanced digital solutions and lifetime service.
Among its recent achievements is a European project featuring a genuinely novel turbine design: a combination of a vertical Kaplan spiral turbine and a horizontally installed pit turbine, where water is directed from above rather than via conventional front-facing inflow. This configuration eliminates an entire weir field, significantly reducing construction costs, while hydraulic simulations demonstrate up to 1.5% higher efficiency — at an installed capacity of 14.3 MW. It is a world first.
A second project highlights a different dimension of sustainability: infrastructure reuse. By integrating a historic headrace tunnel into a new small hydropower system, Global Hydro reduced environmental impact significantly while extending the productive life of assets that would otherwise be stranded. It is a model for how the modernisation agenda — one of IHA's priorities for 2026 — can be pursued without the footprint of greenfield development.
The digital layer of Global Hydro's offer — real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and machine learning-based optimisation — means that smarter generation is not a future aspiration but a current product. For plant owners and investors, that translates into lower lifecycle costs, higher reliability, and a clearer path to long-term sustainable performance.
