No company better embodies the scale of India's renewable energy ambition than Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL). Founded in 2015, the Ahmedabad-headquartered utility has grown into India's largest renewable energy developer, with more than 12 GW of operational solar and wind capacity. By 2030, AGEL is targeting 50 GW of total renewable energy — encompassing solar, wind, hybrid, and crucially, pumped storage hydropower (PSH). It joined IHA as a member in 2025, bringing that ambition directly into the global hydropower community.
The PSH element of AGEL's strategy is striking in its scale. Through a series of memorandums of understanding across multiple Indian states, the company has locked in a pipeline of over 26 GW of pumped storage capacity. Internationally, AGEL has signed an MOU to develop the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan, with further prospecting underway in Nepal and Vietnam.
AGEL is also constructing the world's largest single-location renewable energy park in Khavda, Gujarat — a 30 GW wind, solar, and hybrid facility whose eventual storage requirements make PSH not a peripheral consideration, but a central infrastructure need. The company's integrated approach — co-locating generation and long-duration storage at scale — is exactly the model that India's grid will require as solar and wind penetration accelerates toward the government's 500 GW non-fossil target.
AGEL's commitment to sustainability extends beyond generation. The company is pursuing zero waste to landfill certification, active water management programmes, and ambitious scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions — a profile that aligns closely with IHA's expectations for members operating under the San José Declaration.
