Community and Partnerships

We want to make a difference. It is why we were established in 1854 and it's a key part of what we do at Freemen's today.

We want to teach young people the important concepts of service and giving. These ideas feature heavily in Freemen’s culture, both in and out of the classroom. We want to give our young people opportunities to engage with the local community. We develop partnerships that benefit both the school and the wider community.

Our Work In Numbers

Epsom food bank donation
Carrots, courgettes, potatoes, turnips and corn on the cob were all part of the harvested food donated to epsom-ewell food bank today.

EYLA Graduation Ceremony
Headmaster, Mr. Martin, was honoured to speak at the Eastside Young Leaders Academy graduation ceremony this August.

Developing Leadership Through Partnership
Eight state and independent schools took part in a new programme set up by Freemen’s, aimed at middle and aspiring leaders.

Model United Nations Conference
45 students from three local state schools joined together with students from Freemen’s to debate a wide range of topics.

Students commemorate Epsom’s forgotten residents
The ceramic flowers painted by the students have formed part of the 1,500 flowers displayed in the memorial garden which was unveiled on 10 October, to coincide with World Mental Health Day and part of the Out of Sight, Out of Mind? project.

Love Languages competition
Over 110 students from 12 schools took part in Freemen’s 11th Love Languages competition.

When it was Irene’s time to go into Sixth Form, she made the same decision and Irene came to Freemen’s.

Although Gary joined Freemen’s when he was 11, he was offered a bursary to stay onto Sixth Form in 1990. At that time, his parents were going through a divorce and money was tight.

Supporting the Community

Working in the local community is an integral part of life at Freemen's School, with many students and staff taking part in a wide range of volunteering, community service and fundraising activities.

Freemen's staff and students have undertaken a range of projects with local schools and charities, with a particular focus over the past year on maths support, science, languages and sports activities.

We run a Refugee Buddy Club, in conjunction with Epsom and Ewell Refugee Network. The main aim of the club is to provide one-to-one support with English language skills for local refugee families from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria. Freemen's students are buddied up with local refugees, for friendship as well as help with homework, while their parents are offered English language support by Freemen's teachers.

Working with Partners

Our students and staff benefit greatly from being part of the City of London Family of Schools. We participate in a number of activities throughout the year, including a maths partnership network, music concerts and cutting-edge art projects.

Freemen's launched an exciting new partnership in January 2023 with two Star Academy Schools in the northwest of England, Bay Leadership Academy and The Valley Leadership Academy. Year 10 students in both schools will be given the opportunity to attend our careers talks online. A targeted group of Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to attend a residential visit at Freemen's, prior to applying for a full boarding bursary for Years 12 and 13.

Freemen's careers talks are also being made available to all partner schools - local and City of London Schools. The school was awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag in 2022, in recognition of the work undertaken by pupils to make the school even more environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness with fellow pupils. We will always seek to reuse or recycle any item no longer needed in School, either in the local community or further afield. For example, over 50 boxes of textbooks were sent to a charity in Africa. With a change in uniform, old school blazers have been sent to schools in India and Malawi. Desks and chairs were taken to a new homeless centre in Dorking.
